Vikes/Colts First and Last Game
The fi rst time the Vikings and Colts met was during the Vikings
inaugural 1961 season, a game the Vikings lost 34-33 at Baltimore
(10/1/61). The Vikings would, however, bounce back to defeat the Colts
later that season 28-20 in Minnesota (11/12/61).
The last time these two teams played was on November 8, 2004, at
the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The Vikings lost that game 28-31.
Offensively the Vikings were able to hang with the AFC powerhouse
despite the abscence of playmaking WR Randy Moss, who was
inactive. Without Moss, QB Daunte Culpepper threw for 169 yards with
one touchdown. Collectively, Culpepper and running backs Onterrio
Smith, Michael Bennett and Moe Williams produced 130 rushing yards
with Smith leading the crew with 80 yards and one TD.
The Vikings also relied on the special teams units in the game, as
K Morten Anderson nailed two fi eld goals in the fi rst half from 42 and
23 yards away to help keep the Vikings within striking distance and WR
Nate Burleson returned a punt 91 yards for a touchdown.
Despite the offensive and special teams units putting up 28 points,
the Vikings defense struggled to stop the powerful Colts offense. Without
forcing any turnovers, the defense gave up 408 total yards and 31
points. CB Antoine Winfield led the team with 9 solo tackles, while DT
Kevin Williams notched the team’s only sack.
