That was right at the end of that war. What in the world were you doing there?

    That f&**&*&r was brutal.
I was assigned as a .50 gunner on a Minesweeper.
We were a part of the NATO forces trying to pull the mines out of the gulf.
Oddly, I was an electrician that was "shanghaied" onto the gun.
I asked the XO, "Sir, I'm an electrician.
I don't mind being the gunner, but why me?".
He replied, "You're the only psychopath we have". (TRUE STORY)

That's great stuf; thanks for sharing it.

I didn't even think about all of the mines from that war. I bet the Striat of Hormuz was particularly fouled up with how narrow it is.
At that time, we were friendly with Iraq.
The night we went through the straights, we had 2 Frigates escorting us.
Minesweepers didn't boast a lot of firepower - the .50 was our heaviest gun - and Iran was threatening daily to sink an American ship.
Obviously, we would have been ideal targets.
So, the three MSO's (Minesweepers) and 2 FF's (Fast Frigates) started through at zero-dark-thirty.
I remember that the starboard FF was forward, and the port one was aft.

Being on the gun, I had a great view...well, better than the guys on the fantail anyway...so I saw the Iranian Destroyer in an inlet as we came into view.
Obviously, we were all a bit tense, since that Destroyer could have pounded us into toothpicks (MSO's were made of wood...so as not to attract mines).
I looked aft and the FF was waaaaaay back there.
I looked at the Iranian again.
I looked back again, and that FF had come up out of the hole and FLEW to a position directly in front of the Destroyer and simply parked...guns trained on the Iranian.

Needless to say, we sailed on past with no complications.

That is indeed it...although I never had it with bacon in it that I recall.
You have to remember that in Italy there is typically more than one course for dinner, I typically followed the Penne al"Arrabiatta with La Cotoletta Alla Milanese (which is a breaded veal cutlet.
Lemon wedges are a MUST), then I'd finish off with Scarmorza (which is a fried cheese - slightly elastic and sharp, but awesome...eat while still hot).
I actually liked it with the bacon but Wildwoman was to hot on it.

$75 bucks an hour for RNs that can work the ER here in VA.
3 times that if you get into a home care kindof gig.
    I'm sooo moving to Va....again.
I was stationed in Norfolk for 3 years and lived in Virginia Beach for awhile during that.
In fact, my oldest Daughter was born in Norfolk.
For that kind of cash, I'd relocate.

Wildwoman is in charge of ordering supplies for Riverside ER and its 5 surgery centers.
They have to pay them so much cause they can't keep em on staff because of all the home care stuff.

    Supply and demand.
Short supply of RN's means they can demand alot of bucks for getting worked to death.

    Edit:
    Wildwoman just corrected me.
Starting pay is $28 dollars an hour. Thier top RNs (called Flight nurses) get $75.

The flight nurses actually come to work and then get on the life flight and go to hospitals that don't have a RN they can call in.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

The Italian names certainly make it sound more tasty than just stating you like noodles in chili sauce (goulash), breaded veal cutlets & elastic fried cheese.

Still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick...

Not sure how keen the wife would be on moving, but I'm rather tired of Janesville.
Some place warmer would be nice.
I've shoveled all the snow I want to.

The Italian names - in most cases - describe the foods in greater detail.

Penna al'Arrabiatta = The Angry Pens.
Penne pasta is tapered at both ends, like old style pens were, and they are hot (angry).
The few attempts I've tried stateside are fairly lame - they wuss out on the hot pepper and try and make it more bland (which I suppose means they want it to appeal to a wider base of customers).
In Italy, you simply do not eat the eat hot pepper.
You discretely place it to the side.
If you should eat it, plan on paying for it twice (once going in, and once coming out).
Also, amke sure you have bread and water close at hand...if it's made right, you'll need them.

Cotoletta Alla Milanese desribes HOW the veal is breaded.
I've also had it Alla Bolonese, but I prefer the straight breading to the red sauce (sometimes also seen with mozerella cheese melted on).

    Scarmorza is just scarmorza.
    No neat descriptors there...

"Once we're downsized, I'll have to make a decision.
So far, Nursing has an odd appeal.
Probably because I can go ANYWHERE and get a job.
Oddly, I spent 14 years of my life learning how to put holes in people, now I'm considering patching them up.
That decision isn't carved in stone, but it's how I'm leaning at the moment
    "

Hey Caine, take a look into radiography. 2 years and your in. Train on the job for CT or go a little longer for MRI and you will make nearly as much as the nurses do. Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine take a bit longer, but those jobs pay even more. Not as much demand nationwide for these positions as nursing, but close.

Plus, maybe Webby would let you change your...nevermind ;D

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you will do well.
