Sounds like there must be thousands of them, and they must do alot of damage to the tundra......
We sort of have the same problem here with Canadian Geese.....They $hit and eat all the grass in site. They destroy golf course fairways and greens around here....
I remember one year they were so bad, the State had a speical weekend, when the hunters where allowed to kill as many as possible....If I remeber correctly, something like 12,000 Geese taken that weekend..
I'm not a hunter, but I do love fishing.....
Seems like alot and my first impressions are, what a bunch of A$$ Holes, but thats not always the case, there may be some kind of Geese Population Control behind that hunt...
And Del, not sticking up for them but here, they did donate (what they didn't keep for themselves) many foul to local restaurants and food shelters......

Well we don't have any problems like that in my state so I wasn't aware. I have no respect for waste, and I wasn't assuming they did waste them. I was just curious WTF you would shoot so many. And I hope like you suggested they do donate them somewhere.
Then again the DWR knows quite a bit and if they allow hundreds to be shot there must be a reason. But damn I would just as soon take out a box of clay pigeons.
Again if you hunt like this, I'm sure you have your reasons like NED said. I'm not judging but it seems odd from where I am from.

Snow Geese fly on flocks of the thousands. Its pretty awesome to see.
Here is a pic from my last goose/duck/partridge/pheasant hunt in NoDak. Weather was too nice to hunt, so our carnage was minimal.

Do I see a pheasant mixed in there?
Do you guys have seasons up there? Duck/Swan/Pheasant?
And are you required to use steel shot while hunting near water?

One other thing here, We have alot of Town and Private, Fish and Game Clubs....
Just recently I went to the new Britain, F&G Clubs annuel Game Dinner....
Lots of great dishes, (all donated by the members and friends) BBQ Bison Rids-awesome, Venison Jerk, sausage, stews, ect....Pheasent,Quial,Goose,Duck..ect
Tuna, Shark, (I myself donated 30 lbs of Mako Shark Steaks I kept from my last Mako Catch)...Smoked Blue Fish....ect..
The list goes on, almost 600 attended....
I'm guessing, these hunters, more than likely belong to Clubs also, and donate some to Game Dinners for clubs also.....
Just a guess....

Yes, they have seasons in NoDak. I am not too familiar with when they are. I am a non-resident hunter there (rabbit choker).
Yes, steel shot is required near water.
