Re: Who is the World's Most Popular Athlete?

The thing about soccer players is their fans tend to be very loyal to players from their country or perhaps a foreign player that is on a club team in their country, so I think that hurts any one player from a large worldwide following.

My guess would be Yao, but I'm not sure how popular he is in China.

I think he is VERY popular in China, because of him NBA is the biggest thingi n China right now. They broadcast every game that Houston plays in CCTV5, and now even the playoffs.

The reason I don't think Schumacher is not the top most popular is that F1 is not big in 3rd world poor countries, whereas sport like soccer has its appeal pretty much everywhere
Malaysia is 3rd-world! And they have an f1 race!

He earns something like $50 million a year in endorsements, on top of the $25 million Ferrari pays him. His face is everywhere.

Re: Who is the World's Most Popular Athlete?

Just like vikingTurf, I saw the title of this thread and immediately thought "Michael Jordan"... I also thought "Michael Johnson", but he's ruled out as well!

Active sportsmen with global recognition (I assume you mean recognition, and not the most favourite athlete)? Hmmmm... The thing is, if he hasn't been named in the first few responses, chances are it ain't the guy. I'd have to go with some Olympians alongside the football players and F1 drivers, and this brings me to another point. Sorry ladies, but it's going to be a man who's the most recognised athlete. Here's my list o' names for consideration:

    David Beckham
    Ronaldinho
Asafa Powell (the fastest man in the world)
    Michael Schumacher
Brian Lara (he does have a videogame franchise named after him!)

There maybe few countries like that, but think about Africa continent as a whole, think abotu China and India(two biggest population centers). Ask any middle-lower class family in those countries, they are more likely to know about Beckham than Schumacher purely because of the sport they are involved in
