Birk sat out both practices today with a groin injury.
    Even babies know the difference.

    What happend to Birk??

I saw that Tice said that he is in alot of pain, but it shouldn't be a long term injury. He also said that Corey Withrow and Lewis Kelly did well playing while Birk has been gone.

    What happend to Birk??

    Absence shows Birk's value

MANKATO -- Pandemonium broke loose on the Vikings offense Monday, if only briefly. For the first time in four years and three days, someone other than Matt Birk was playing center during first-team drills.

While Birk was undergoing tests for a pelvis injury, backups Cory Withrow and Lewis Kelly received a crash course in high-level line play. A double case of nerves led to a series of botched snaps and missed assignments, and while both players settled down by the end of a three-hour morning practice, the Vikings never again will take for granted Birk's importance to their potentially record-setting offense.

"It was a little bit of an eye-opener for everyone," offensive line coach Steve Loney said. "Matt Birk has always been Mr. Reliable. He's always around and never has a bad day. Players take each other for granted sometimes, and you think this guys is always going to be there. Then if he isn't, you've got to be able to get with it."

While participating in a long-stride running exercise after the Vikings' opening practice Saturday morning, Birk began feeling discomfort in his groin.

He returned Sunday night to the Twin Cities. Doctors diagnosed him Monday with inflammation in the joint where his left pelvis meets his right pelvis. Such symptoms indicates an injury known as osteitis pubis, which can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication.

It is not yet clear whether Birk has that condition, but he received an anti-inflammatory injection in the joint with the belief that he does. He should know in two or three days if the treatment was successful.

If all goes well, he will return to practice Wednesday morning, coach Mike Tice said. If the discomfort persists, Birk will undergo more tests.

"We're hoping we know what it is," said Birk, who returned to Mankato in time to watch the afternoon practice. "But it's still not 100 percent figured out yet. We'll know in a couple days if what we did today worked or not."

The injury ended Birk's iron-man streak of training camp practices, one he shared with receiver Randy Moss.

"It was a big deal to me," Birk said. "At first I thought this thing was just something minor. I was figuring I could get through this, it's just a little strain. But [the streak] is a big deal to me, and something I take a lot of pride in. But it's not the most important thing."

Assuming Birk returns to the field promptly, Monday's fire drill should prove beneficial to the Vikings. Life without Birk previously was an abstract thought, but the Vikings now have now polished their doomsday scenario.

Both Withrow and Kelly, whom the Vikings are attempting to make a utility backup in the mold of former teammate Everett Lindsay, dropped a snap on the ground when the team was in shotgun formation. The Vikings defense dominated the ensuing 9-on-7 run drills, as the blocking schemes fell out of sync.

"A lot of people look to Matt for leadership," Withrow said. "At first, with him not being there, it was a little awkward. I got a little excited, rocking with the big boys and playing with the varsity. I got kind of uptight."

Withrow settled down, however, and showed why the Vikings always have maintained he could fill in for Birk if necessary. Tice ended practice with a best-of-nine competition between the offense and defense, during which Withrow and the first team held their own before the second-team defense keyed a 5-4 defensive victory.

"We matured a little bit as an offense because of the Birk situation," Tice said. "We lost our leader, but they didn't give and they came back and made a good run. ... It gave us an opportunity to see if we do have a legitimate No. 2 center and frankly a No. 3 center, and I thought both of them stepped up pretty good."

    What happend to Birk??

I don't know if you guys saw the other posts or have heard any updates as to what the status is of Matt Birk so in case you have not heard anything additional I will fill you in. Matt had surgery this morning for a sports hernia and they say he should be out a few weeks but will be back in time to start against Dallas at the season opener that is barring he has any setbacks of any kind. So although not great news they are expecting him back before regular season and Tice said he is guaranteed he will be in shape enough to start so it should not hurt or regular season too much.
