Thread: What is a good web hosting service?

I need to build a website for someone, and it needs to be better than one of those free tripod websites.
What would be a good hosting service?
I've looked at godaddy.com, so using that as a reference point, what would be better? any to stay away from?

I need

enough space for about 500 medium to high quality pictures

enough bandwidth

ftp transfers

a site builder is optional, but nice to have

free or cheap domain name

email addresses would be nice as well, but not mandatory.

thanks for the input, but i found a place called host monster, and it looks pretty good.
Has stuff that godaddy doesn't.
with their special on, $72 gets me a year of hosting service, plus a free unlimited domain name.
unlimited hd space, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited emails.
ftp, SQL, more stuff than I'll ever use, for less than any other site I've seen.
Aparantly it rates very well too.

Blue Host and Dream host. Been satisfied with both

how much do those cost?
Do they include everything I listed in my first post?
It will have to be pretty cheap to sway me from unlimited space, bandwidth and email, and an award winning admin control panel.
also, only $4.95 a month with no setup fees or domain fees.

I have used both of those before, and I currently use Dreamhost for my personal site.

i have my own hosting co. kinda piggybacking as a reseller.

you can find many that have good hd space, beware the bandwidth per month.

pm me if u want details, but that price range for host monster is pretty avg. 70-120 a year depending on domain services, # of domains and such. a couple things to check for.

1. has mysql priv's and # of possible db's.
2. a good ui or control panel
3. shell access
4. get a server for the code u use. ie. php, jsf, asp apache/jboss/.netframework

reporting is nice if you have lots of visits or high traffic. but not always nessessary.
