USDA announces beef recall
http://kstp.com/article/stories/S349810.shtml?cat=1
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse that is being investigated for mistreating cattle.
Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats.
Here are the best parts of the article
The federal agency said the recall will affect beef products dating to Feb. 1, 2006, that came from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., which supplies meat to the federal school lunch program and to some major fast-food chains.
and
Officials estimate that about 37 million pounds of the recalled beef went to school programs, but they believe most of the meat probably has already been eaten. There have been no reported illnesses linked to the beef at any of the schools.

Just another reason to support your local Butchers.
They are a dieing breed but will still get you a quality piece of meat, cut the way you want it and you won't have to worry about all the crap like this.
Long story short, go find a farmer that sells animals on the hoof, get a good butcher to slaughter it, age it and cut it to your specifications.
You can't go wrong.

Hell I still cut and wrap all of the meat we eat in our house.
I get shoulders and hinds from a local butcher shop and process it here in my house.
Course it helps that I have the knowledge, a grinder, a slicer and a beautifull bride who is willing to help.

Mostly specialty stuff like sausage, hams, beef sticks etc.
We have two old boys down here in VA that do a decent job but I just can't bring myself to letting them do something I can do better.
Not only that, my brother lives in the area and he would tell Dad on me.
He was always a squeeler.

These stories always make me mad. Most of the 37 million pounds were eaten and not one person got sick? This makes me think it is really not that big of a concern and just a collosal waste of millions of pounds of beef. But because of the recall beef sales will fall off because the general population is scared to eat it. There is nothing to be scared of, no one is getting sick. With the mad cow disease the only way you could get sick is if the beef was from a sick cow, and the butcher accidentally included spinal tissue with the beef, and you ate it uncooked.http://kstp.com/article/stories/S349810.shtml?cat=1

This was an even bigger deal a couple of years ago with the bird flu. Poultry sales around the world dropped drastically. The truth was that no one in the United States ever got sick. 3 people in the world did die but they all drank the blood of a freshly killed bird.
It is alot of media hype over nothing. Just for ratings. It works because most people eat beef and chicken so any story about it effects nearly everyone.

No one will be sickened by this.
Just something fun for the media to run wild with.
