Twins Santana Trade Haunts
January 29, 2008, the Minnesota Twins agreed to trade former Cy Young pitcher Johan Santana to the New York Mets for The Mets for four players: outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey.
The Twins needed the pitching of Santana during their division run in 2008, and the players they received in the trade did little to help them at the major league level. In time, the players, other than Guerra, would leave the Twins organization.
In December 2009, Phil Humber signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals and pitched in limited action. In December 2010, he was picked up on waivers by the Chicago White Sox. In 2011, Humber went 9-9 with a 3.75 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 163 innings pitched. Yesterday, the division rival Chicago White Sox starter became the 21st big-league pitcher in history throw for a perfect game with nine hitters going down with strikeouts.
