Re: trivia--- what major event is the song "ring around the rosy

Someone probably answered already, but not as in depth as i'm about to.

"Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posies, ashes ashes we all fall down."

The bubonic plague killed 1/3 of the Population in Europe in the 15th and 16th century.

It caused you to get black growths on your skin, and that is why they had the pocket full of posies, to smell so you wouldn't have to smell your own rotting flesh.

I learned this in about October in my AP European class this year, so I don't remember it entirely, but I know that's clsoe enough.

They killed all the cats thinking that the cats were the animals that were spreading the disease, but it was the rats! With the cats all nearly gone the rat population soared and spread the plague even faster and farther.

Yeah, it was the bubonic (or black) plague.

I had heard before that it was about the Plague too. And I alwasy believed it. In fact, I was going to go to the snopes page to get some facts to post to confirm it, when to my surprise, I learned that this is false!

Turns out therre are no references to the nursey rhyme to be found before the late 1800's, a full five hundred years after the plague. And the earliest variations of the rhyme are a lot different that the one we know.

For example, these two versions were published by William Wells Newell in 1883:

    Ring a ring a rosie,
    A bottle full of posie,
All the girls in our town,
    Ring for little Josie.

    Round the ring of roses,
    Pots full of posies,
    The one stoops the last
Shall tell whom she loves the best.

Or this version from Charlotte Sophia Burne's 1883 Shropshire Folk-Lore:

    Ring-a-ring o' roses,
    A pocket full of posies,
One for Jack, and one for Jim,
    And one for little Moses.
    A-tischa! A-tischa! A-tischa!

Or this version collected by Alice Gomme and published in the Dictionary of British Folk-Lore in 1898:

    Ring, a ring o' roses,
    A pocket full o' posies,
    Up-stairs and down-stairs,
    In my lady's chamber --
    Husher! Husher! Cuckoo!

The current thought is that the rhyme was actually part of a circle game that was used to get around the religious prohibition of dancing. Similar to "A Tisket, A Tasket" or "Hey Diddle Diddle".

Check out the snopes page for more info.
