Re: They should kick him out of school
This is a good example of how nature weeds out the dumb people.
Luckily it wasn't worse, like hurting a student.

He endangered the lives of his students and for this he should not only lose his job, but he should also lose his teaching certificate.
I am a teacher, and this kind of idiocy should not be tolerated in school.

Although this does not make what he did any less stupid, it was not in a classroom full of kids. Also, the article does not specify if the school was publically funded or not. Based on the fact that it is adult education, and teaching computer design, I would guess that it was not. Probably a fly-by-night trade school of some sort. I think the guy got what he deserved. If a student brings any dangerous object to school they are suspended. Maybe the same should go for the teachers...
Paperweight severs Calif. teacher's hand
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
VENTURA, Calif. -- A teacher who kept a 40 mm shell on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say.
The 5-inch-long shell exploded Monday while Robert Colla was teaching 20 to 25 students at an adult education class.
Part of Colla's right hand was severed and he suffered severe burns and minor shrapnel wounds to his forearms and torso, fire Capt. Tom Weinell said. No one else was injured. He was reported in stable condition at a hospital.
The teacher slammed the shell down in an attempt to kill something that was buzzing or crawling across the desk, said Fire Marshal Glen Albright.
Colla found the 40 mm round while hunting years ago and "obviously he didn't think the round was live," said Dennis Huston, who teaches computer design alongside Colla.

This is a 40 mm gun

M1 40mm Gun, emplaced with outriggers. (TM 9-252, May 1952)
My question is where and what was he hunting that he would find a live shell that fits this just laying around? Sounds a little fishy to me.

Re: They should kick him out of school
RK,
It really doesn't suprise me. I've seen stories about people digging their back yards to put in a garden in the Philippines, sometimes digging up cases of grenades and or shells (canon ammo).....Mostly stuff the Japaness hid during WWII.
But I don't find it hard to believe he found a shell like that, it may have been in an area where some Armed Services Branch held manuvers...
I LOVE THE SMELL OF VICTORY IN THE MORNING AIR.

I would think so. If it can blow up like a grenade, yes it is a weapon"elgordo" wrote:

What I don't get is that if he used it as a paper weight why didn't any othe rteachers, janitors, or principle say something about it?
The guy is an idiot. And they wonder why kids aren't scoring high on assesment tests.
