Now from what I understand, and that is just what I have seen on the History channel.
Male Muslims are required once in their lifetime to go to Saudi Arabia for a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Part of the right is to circle a stone as a group in a clockwise or counterclockwise walk and cast stones at a stone that is a "symbol" of the devil.

It reaches a fevered pitch quite often and injuries are quite common.
As I also understand it, any injury whether accident or self inflicted during this "purge" of the flesh is an outward sign of one's faith.

Now I may wrong on this, but this is what I recall the program touched on.

If I am wrong I assure any Muslim that reads this that I mean absolutely no disrespect.
I am merely drawing on what I can remember from the documentary.
