Re: Shockzilla's Newest trivia Question...
Bastet was the cat-goddess. She was worshiped mainly in the city of Bubastis. She protected cats and everyone who liked cats, because of this cats were prized pets. People could die for killing a cat, even by accident. In ancient Egyptian beliefs, cats were the ones who killed the serpents that were attacking the sun-god.
Cat funerals were very elaborate including a small coffin for the animal and contained mummified mice for her to snack on in the afterlife. To kill a cat in ancient Egypt was a crime punishable by death.
Ancient Egyptians saw cats as mysterious and held them in much regard. They believed that a cats glowing eyes mirrored the sun. This led to the Egyptian idea that a cat could save them from evil and darkness. They would decorated their cats with jewels and gold. A cats sleeping pattern (curled up in a ball with her head touching her tail) was the Egyptian symbol of fertility.
