    Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Pink Floyd legend Syd Barrett dies
Musician a major influence on British psychedelia

    Tuesday, July 11, 2006; Posted: 12:13 p.m. EDT (16:13 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Syd Barrett, the eccentric guitarist who founded Pink Floyd but later left the music business to live quietly and somewhat reclusively, has died at the age of 60, according to a spokeswoman for the band.

A spokeswoman for Pink Floyd told the Press Association: "He died very peacefully a couple of days ago. There will be a private family funeral."

"Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire," the surviving members of Pink Floyd -- Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright -- said in a statement.

The man who says he CAN'T and the man who says he CAN are BOTH right.

I heard about that - the rest of the band made the album "Wish You Were Here" for him.

I'm a big Pink Floyd fan.

Bit of trivia: Where did they get the name Pink Floyd from, why did they pick it, and what was their name before they became Pink Floyd?

Prior to becoming Pink Floyd there were known as The Abdabs, then The Pink Floyd Sound and finally Pink Floyd.

The name Pink Floyd was actually taken from the first names of two blues artists (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council) and it is said that using that name came to Syd Barrett in a dream.

If you want to know more about Pink Floyd then get in touch with PacNWVike as he's a big Floyd fan

Don't mean to knock on Syd here, but perhaps, they got "much notoriety, because david gilmoure joined the band?" he is without a doubt one of the best guitarists ever. he may not be as fast and techincal as others like jimmy page and peter frampton, but his tone is killer, and he's smooth and an all around great musician.

    RIP Syd.

ps. thats a great song, Shine on you crazy diamond
