For the most part, my memories of youth are nicer than those as an old fart!
BTW, while McCarthy's tactics may have been questionable, the threat was not.
Since the Soviet Union collapsed and we gained access to Stasi and KGB archives, we found most of the Communist activities that some characterized as "right wing paranoia" were true.
For a boring but eye opening read, check out The Sword and the Shield: The Mitrokhin Archive and the Secret History of the KGB.
You'll be amazed at the successful disinformation campaigns that people still believe are true.
Thanks for the recommendation, Pac. I actually happen to really like reads that most people would consider boring, especially if they involve spy tactics. And you're not that old, bud!

BTW, have you checked out the "how many PPO'ers have you met" thread yet? Seems like everyone has met you!

The advancements in technology and medicine are the nice changes.....the changes in federal regulations and laws are the bad ones.

It's easy to say that that prior times were better than these current times, but pretty difficult to prove.
I can help you prove it to yourself.
(Unless you grew up in a home were you were beat dailey and your Mom and Dad were Fargin Iceholes.)

Honestly think back to your youth.
    Tell me life wasn't simpler.
Dad and Mom there to feed, protect, love you?
    No hassles from the boss.
Free to play, do whatever during the summer ect ect ect.
OK, I can get behind that, smart guy
(and nice Johnny Dangerously reference BTW).

The point I was making though, Baumy, is that times change for good and ill. Look, I live in Portland, Ore., supposedly one of the worst bastions of liberal nincompoopery out there (and I certainly contribute to that plenty myself), but I can't stand the PC kaka del rio anymore than reddest red-stater out there.

At the same time, I also recognize that we are approaching the 50 year anniversary (on Sept. 25) of
President Eisenhower having to call out 1000 National Guard troops to Little Rock, Arkansas so that 9 black kids could go to school with the white kids (and this was 3 years after the first Brown v. Board of Education decision). Certainly things have gotten better in this area (to a degree) in 50 years.

This is what I'm talking about when I say I don't like the "things used to be better back in the day" argument. Some things were. Others were not. And if you don't like the way things are, lobby your representatives in Congress.

So ya like Johnny Dangerously ehhhh

    Good points.

Lobbyists are over rated. They still haven't gotten me a "National White Boy Month"

I'll stick with owning lots of guns as well as making sure my wife and kids can shoot-em straight and fast.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Also, one could just as easily point out examples of how times are better now than then.
    Here's an example:

1956: Joseph McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin, holds hearings to root out communists from innocent Americans whose only crimes may have been to know people whose sister's father-in-law was involved in the Socialist Party in the 1930's.

2006: Joseph McCarthy is dead. The Soviet Union no longer exists. No one is afraid of Communism, and the US is the sole hegemonic power in the world.

    Whoopdee doo.
Now we have terrorism instead! Whoopdee doo is right.
