haha, all I'm saying is Canada dominates international hockey like the US used to dominate at international basketball.
    They do?

    How many gold medals recently?
About as many as the US has basketball medals...
So what you're saying Canada USED to dominate in hockey.
..except we've won most other recent tournaments...
Canada dominated Olympic Hockey up to 1952.
Since then they have won 1 gold medal.
The US has 2 since then.

    And...Canada finished 7th in 2006.

    [/quote]

I was referring to tournaments like the world hockey championship, the world junior championship and the Spengler cup.

However, The US has 1 medal (silver) to show for since your fabled 1980 team won.
    And...the US finished 8th in 2007.

    Read between the lines.
For a lot of that time the Canadians did not participate and/or the professional players were obligated to remain in the NHL (which was composed of predominately Canadian players) during the Olympics.
Despite that, we're tied for most medals and most gold medals...

We own at women's hockey too..

Just stirring the pot a little.

Was there an actual point to this thread other than reminiscing about the US teams' last successful team?

Re: A Reminder of What We Can Be

It has nothing to do with the team... its about when it happened and the fact that at the time, it gave something for the American people to have faith in.

    I hate Hockey.
But the story is truely an amazing one, and if you don't get that then please just stop posting in this topic.
All you've done is start a America vs Canada bullshit discussion.

If you've never seen it or read about it, I suggest you do so, but maybe you wouldn't understand idk.
During the time this happened, like others said, morale was at a big time low in the U.S.A... we were deeply engaged in the height of the Cold War and tensions were flaring up dramatically with the heat of the Iranian Hostage Crisis.
It has NOTHING to do with who's good at what or which country won how many games, it has to do with bringing some joy and hope to a country that was going through a very rough point and the passion and heart they showed in their play

I *think* I still have this issue in my archives some place.
This article has always given me chills.
    I hope you enjoy it.

    E.M. Swift
    December 22, 1980

At a time when international tensions and domestic frustrations had dampened traditional American optimism, the underdog U.S. Olympic hockey team gave the entire nation a lift by defeating the world's top team, the Soviets, and ultimately winning the gold medal. Those youngsters did so by means of the old-fashioned American work ethic, which some people feared was disappearing from the land

    Yes.
I am locking this thread now.
Sorry that my attempt at posting a well-written and heart-warming story from 28 years ago has devolved into a US-Canada pissing match.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!
