According to the Department of Justice, it costs $22,632 a year, or $62.01 a day to house one inmate, as of 2001, there are probably more updated figures by now. So even more than $22large.

The United States has a population 300,000,000. Let's say 75% of which are adults.

300,000,000 divided by 100= 3,000,000

75% of 3,000,000= 2,250,000

2,250,000*22,632= $50,922,000,000 For those of you bad with numbers, that's Fifty Billion, nine-hundred and twenty two million dollars. Spent on housing prisoners per year.

And that's a minimum figure. I should have said "at least Fifty Billion, nine-hundred and twenty two million dollars. Spent on housing prisoners per year." (Remember it was "more than 1 in 100" and the DOD figures were from 2001)

Only 45-50%(I can't seem to get an exact figure) of inmates are violent offenders. But it costs just as much to keep a non-violent criminal imprisoned as it does a violent one.


I'm by no means preaching for legalization of marijuana or any other drug, but don't throw people in prison for it. That's just ridiculous. Lock up people who have intent to sell, or supply to minors, the people who fuel crime.

As for possession charges though this is my take on it.w

A fine for first time offenders

Probation or house arrest for the second offense

Intensive Supervision probation or incareceration for the third strike- Judge's discretion may be applied, if I were the judge I'd take into account; age, likelihood of recidivism, and the weight of the drug. If it's pot, honestly, that's no big deal IMO, but crack, cocaine, heroine, prescription drugs, amphetamines, or LSD/Acid(Really any hallucinogenics) should be incarcerated.

I would also let the judge sentence someone to prison time for their second offense for a drug possession if they have priors.


But all of these stupid, non-violent offenders we're paying for to keep in prison is so stupid. child support dodgers, stoners, and basically anything else not listed on the UCR don't need to be locked up, it's a huge waste of money.

I have another great idea.
Two words:
Reality Television.
Ship them off to abandon oil platforms in the gulf.
Setup camera and see what happens.

Do mass riots break out and inmates get tossed into the sea?
Do they form different cliques and battle for supremecy?
Do they try to live civilized?
Who knows, but I bet it would be very entertaining to watch.
Even more importantly we can put the revenue from the show towards the cost of inmate housing.
Win/Win.
