    Pump & Run

Not sure if any of you are familiar with a pump and run, but it's a competition in which you bench press your body weight, or a % of, based on age and gender.
Then you do a 5k race.

I did my first ever this morning.
I didn't really know what to expect.
But, I knew that in my age group, 18-39, I'm 27, I had to bench 100% of my body weight.
For each rep on the bench you get 30 sec's knocked off your run time.
I weighed in at 218, and they round up, so I benched 220.
    I got 10 reps.
Not bad for not taking my training too seriously.
But, I would watch guys put up 15, 20, and even 30 reps in the coming hours.
Most of the guys were over 40, which meant 90%, a few were over 50, which was 80%.
I went first, and I was the only guy who had to lift over 200, despite a couple other 200 lb'rs being there.
Anyway, that was 5 mins off my run.

I start the run, with one goal in mind, to beat my buddy Josh by 2 1/2 mins.
He weighed in at 160, and benched 15 reps.
An automatic 2 min 30 sec head start over me.

I was doing alright the first mile, except for not having a clue how fast I was going, when about a mile and half in, he passed me.
    That crushed me.
I could the take the little kids, and the senior citizens, but not him.

I ended up finishing the run in 28:35, less 5 mins for the bench, 23:35.
Josh ended up finishing at 25:40, less 7 min 30 sec, for a total of 18:10.

One thing that made it alright that Josh beat me, was that he did finish 1st in our age group, in terms of awards, which was 25-30.

I'm doing another one in March at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, OH.
I've got a lot of work to do before then.

On a funny, and somewhat embarrassing note, coming around the last bend with probably 200-300 yards left, someone said we were almost there, and there was a girl, probably 7 or 8 in front of me, there was no way I was letting her beat me, so I kicked it up a gear down the home stretch.

Although, I accomplished my goals of 10 reps and a run under 30 mins, I still feel disappointed.
There were roughly 200 people in the 5k, only about 25 or so in the pump and run.
I believe I came in last in the pump and run.
There were quite a few people behind me in the 5k though.
That last place finish and losing to Josh is just more motivation for the next one.

Isn't a pump and run a one night stand?

In that case, it wasn't my first ever.

Congrats on finishing your first pump and run race, JDogg! Good luck in your upcoming races as well.

    Re: Pump & Run

It sounds like a pretty fun idea. If it weren't that I can't bench press much, I might even consider entering such a race. I get I could make up for it somewhat in the run though, but 30 secs./rep can become significant when it's such a short run

Thanks to PPE for the sig.

It'd be over for me at the first "P".

Yeah, I hear you there... after my graduate school, I'd get my ass kicked in this...

Maybe a year after I'm done I can try it

    Re: Pump & Run

I just found the official results.
I finished the race 177 out of 209.
That little girl that I smoked around the last bend was 9.

It is a lot of fun.
I was actually running for about a half mile with a guy in a Vikings hat toward the end.
He benched 25 reps, but when someone passed us saying we only had 25 sec's left, I kicked it up a gear.
She lied though, it was a solid minute from there.

    Re: Pump & Run

Too bad that they didn't have those kinds of competitions when I was younger...I used to be able to max on the bench over twice my body weight (weighed 150 and maxed 325)...plus I was a decent runner.
I probably could have thrown up 150 lbs all day long...maybe even come in on the run with a negative time...LOL

Anyway, good luck with your training JDogg...a little less 12 oz. curls and a few more bench presses and you will be doing better in no time!
BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE
