Seriously though one reason may be because of how much money it costs to actually partake in a mission of that magnitude. I think they found it much more useful (with their limited budget) to send multiple satelites to recover data then missions to the moon.

Fear not though there are some serious advancements being made by private industries that are going to be heading off into space. So we will see what happens with that.
