Seems like a perfect opportunity to give him a "Promotion" to student coach or something like that where he was elevated at least symbolically. Some times being proactive and doing a bit of PR can go a long way.

Can't he be hired or made a team mascot? A mascot could wear any costume, suit the school deems fit., including a football uniform.
