Physicists Say Headfirst Slide to Base Faster, MAYBE

    http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/09/science-stumped.html

According to Peters, it's simple physics: As a runner slides headfirst, the body's center of gravity -- and therefore its momentum -- is thrust forwards. Slide feet first, and the body's center of gravity falls backwards, away from the base.

"It's basic, fundamental angular momentum and Newton's laws applied to a body in motion being flung through the air," Peters said. Fellow physicist Alan Nathan agreed, noting that it's easier for a runner's churning legs to generate force with head and arms leading, not trailing...

That approach usually works better in childbirth

It just hurts a hell of a lot more.

It's actually faster not to slide but a lot more difficult to stop on the base.
That's why it's stupid to slide into first unless you are avoiding a tag.......

When you're sliding into first and you feel a great big burst.....

But you also have to shift your weight forward to slide head first, where you essentially just drop your ass to the ground to slide feet first.

Also, a feet first slide can put you back in position to hop up and run again if there's a throwing error.

People apparently aren't reading the whole article, which often happens on this board. The fact is, physics can lie!

Physics can't lie. But there is no conclusive evidence on this subject, so right now I wouldn't even call it physics.

Three studies found no difference, the other found a .02 second difference.

The article also says that the headfirst slide is riskier, if you don't execute it properly you will lose a lot of momentum, slowing your slide down.

    So yeah, maybe.

    I would go feet first

I don't think there is much of a difference and its alot less riskier
