Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080227/ap_on_fe_st/odd_kindergarten_suspension;_ylt=AuL_8iWxE08Eb.gmQ q_Oj88sQE4FPARMA, Ohio - A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school.
Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.........

Re: Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk
Schools are getting more and more ridiculous.
Even since I've been going to school (and i'm only 18) times have changed.
No uniforms or dress code, no hat rules...
Now kids can't even wear hats in , or in this case mohawks.
also, nothing like suspending a KINDERGARDEN kid when it was clearly his mom's call on the mohawk.

Re: Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk
I think the school officials should be the ones facing the suspension.
Don't they have better things to be focusing their energy on?
Like maybe teaching for instance?
???

At my school, a cop will often come around nabbing kids for doing weed.
One day when he was walking around the school with the principal, me and a buddy were tossing a football around in the hallway, right by the door where a bunch of kids are illegally smoking on school property.
Instead of giving them a hard time, the cop comes to me and gives me a hard time because we're not supposed to throw footballs indoors.
Doesn't he have anything better to be doing?? he's a police officer.

Maybe the school officials just came to their senses and realized the kid was Too Cool For School anyways.

Re: Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk
While I don't agree with the administration's decision, it isn't like they saw he had a mohawk and immediately suspended him.
If she disagrees with the policy, that is something to take up with the school board. An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.
Mohawks violate the school's policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district's dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education.
Just ignoring them and sending the kid to school for more than half a year after the school repeatedly told her that it violated their dress policy was stupid on the mom's part.
EDIT: I also see that the school is a charter school, which means that dress codes are both permissible and fairly common...Zeus wrote:
When are you going to realize that picking out the 20 bad throws this year and ignoring the 300 good ones does not make your point?

For the record, I don't see a problem with the kid's haircut.

If this happened in my kids' school district, and the mom was smart enough to bring it before the board instead of just ignoring them, I would have lobbied against the policy too.Zeus wrote:
