Well, I suppose if he wanted he could be a baron instead.

Hey, BLV, has OPEC called yet? I have a few things I'd like to say to them.
No they haven't called, but they just staked 5 well locations on my families land yesterday but that doesn't mean they are going to drill them.

Re: North Dakota: Home to Future Oil Sheikhs?

Well considering the US uses about 8 billion barrels(27bil for the world) a year I don't think this will solve all our oil problems. Plus this is not the cheap oil that we are used to getting from the middle east where they pretty much dig a hole and the oil comes shooting out. This is expensive oil that costs much more to extract and I believe it usually takes 10-20years to produce any oil from a new site. Still though with oil going at a about $100 a barrel 4billion barrels would be worth about $400,000,000,000.00. That could pay for 400 new stadiums for the vikings. ;D

    BLV,

If they where to put a rig on one of your familys staked out sites,
how does your family reap any benefits from that?
Is it like a cell phone tower, where the land owner gets paid a rental type fee monthly for putting the tower on your property?...

    Just wondering bud.

The oil company leases the area where the well sits and then they also pay for the damage they do to the land when they set up the roads and the site.
Then if the well produces you get paid a certain percentage for the oil, but if you don't own the mineral rights under the land you get nothing.

Well then, best of luck and I'll say a prayer for your family to be one of the lucky ones if anything does happen in the area........Sure would make for some good stories I bet......

They are doing that sort of extraction in Canada right now and it is creating a booming economy in their oil shale fields. They said at 30 dollars a barrel it isn't feasible but at 100 a barrel it can be very competitive and profitable.

Maybe you'll be able to get power steering in your pickup.

I took these pictures yesterday. These two derricks popped up
about a mile from my parents house in the last week and they are about a mile or less apart
