The Nigerian Football League (NFL) Congress Wednesday in Abuja approved the abridged league format as proposed by the league board, breaking the Premier League into two and the Pro-League Division One into four for the 2006 season only.

The format, which is a measure to harmonize the NFL calendar in line with others in the continent and will be only for the 2006 season being proposed to end by August, brings back a Super League competition at a neutral venue that will involve the top two winners in both groups in the Premier League fighting for the two CAF Champions League tickets as well as one of the two tickets into the African Confederation Cup competition.

"Also, the Congress which okayed season time-table as drawn up and which puts the draws at 27 March and the season kick-off date at 01 April accepted in principle the amendment to Article 49 of the league's rules on the minimum wage for players. It now says players' monthly salaries are negotiable but shall be between 75,000 and 100,000 Naira for a pro-league player and between 100,000 and 150,000 Naira for a Premier League player," Artur told sources.

The Congress which was attended by 49 of the 52 eligible clubs, according to Kwame Arthur, the Secretary of the Club Owners Association, adopted the financial and activity reports as presented by the now dissolved NFL Interim Management Board led by Oyuiki Obaseki, while it also approved amendments to the rules and regulations of the league.
