One thing I remember about being a kid is how fun the Walt Disney World resorts were themselves. It was almost like you never left the park at all. I think the kids will have a blast at either, but I'd go with the resorts.

    Enjoy your trip!!!

    Hey Bud.
My two girls, my Wife, and I have been there many times (10+), and, many ways.

At the age of your kids, I made the decision to buck up, stay on the Property (big bucks), on the Monorail...and didn't regret it.
You've got 3 choices, Polynesian, Contemporary, or the Grand Floridian.
The Grand Floridian is out...pomp and circumstance, unless you have a bottomless pit of cake, and you wear a sport coat to the Parks, no.

The Contemprorary or the Polynesian are equally acceptable, depending on your preference.
The Polynesian is a little bit more remote...huts, and/or buildings no more then 3 stories (if I remember correctly), the Contemporary, is a bit of a misnomer, meaning, it's been around for many years, and is no longer 'contemporary.'
But, that's the charm of the place.
Either way, at that age, you need to Plan your days.

    Tips:
Interview your kids to determine favorite Disney characters.
    Once complete:
schedule Character Meals, I recommend breakfast at the Grand Floridian with the "Alice in Wonderland" characters.
There are many, many more to enjoy...a couple of things to remember, it's for the kid's and it's gonna be uber crowded.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent

We went to Disney World, Sea World & Universal Studios Park when my girls were like 8 & 10.

All they wanted to do was go back to the hotel & swim in the pool. LOL

We've stayed in a number of different locations within Disney World, but the best times we've ever had was tenting in Fort Wilderness (we've stayed in Fort Wilderness 5+ times).
Of course they have full hookups too if you have an RV, or pop-up, or whatever.
Once you're within the resort you won't want to leave.
You get a transportation card, with free bus rides anywhere within Walt Disney World, from the attractions, to the hotels, Disney Village, etc.
There's several pools within Fort Wilderness, or the beach at Bay Lake, where there's hammocks, a playground and small motor boats at the marina.
You can also pick up a boat to the Magic Kingdom.
There's a number of pretty cool Trading Posts within Fort Wilderness, a number of restaurants, and it's also where the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review is performed nightly.
The place is amazing and is an absolute blast.
PM me if you have any questions.

We like the Park Hopper passes because we like to start in one park, say Disney/MGM Studios, and end in another, like Epcot, for the light show.
As long as you're a resort guest you have free transportation between the parks.
I think the minimum days you have to purchase for Park Hopper passes are four... but the passes never expire so if you don't use them this trip you can use them another year.

Watch the schedule for what times the parks open.
Everyday one particular park opens an hour early for resort guests.
Make sure you get there on time, and do the most popular ride first, and you may have time to do it twice before the lines get to be ridiculous.
i.e. go to Rockin' Roller Coaster at MGM first, etc.

Don't be afraid to go to a park if it looks like it might rain part of the day.
That will hold a lot of the crowds away.
Just bring (or buy) a rain poncho.

I would check out the fast pass option.
    http://themeparks.about.com/cs/disneyparks/a/fastpass.htm

It can cut down the amount of time you spend in lines considerably.
