Thread: Mountain Man

First of all I just have to point out this is in the clubhouse. So it doens't matter if it is off topic.

I love American history, I don't know why, I can't explain it. Indians, gunslingers, mountain men, wars, religious persecution, slavery......the list goes on and on. A note on slavery, I don't support it :grin: I just enjoy learning about it. Why people did what they did, the struggle people had to earn freedom. Any way. I just wanted to tell you guys a story you may know allready. But to me it is amazing.


Hugh Glass.

No one really knows where the guy came from. It is rumored he was a sailor, a pirate more specific, but it is believed he came from Ireland.

Anyway the real documented history starts when a guy named William Ashley put an add in the paper asking for 100 men to ascend the Missouri to partake in collecting furs. And you would be gone 1,2, or 3 years.

So Glass signs up. He is 22 years old. Other guys that are famous you might recognize, Jedediah Smith (Christian mountainman, very famous.) Jim Bridger, Tom Fitzpatrick.

He is immediatley seen as a tough SOB. And is wounded in a fight with indians but manages to survive. That is another story in itself but the real amazing story to me happens in August 1823.

He was scouting ahead and he spooked a mother Grizzly bear and her two cubs. The bear attacked him, and he killed it with his knife. But not before it did serious damage. His scalp was torn completely off, it was dangling only by one ear that was still attatched. His leg was broken, he had skin ripped from his back so deep and wide his ribs on one side were exposed.

Hearing the screams the party ran up to him, they found him unconcious and the mother Griz, dead next to him with his knife burried in her neck. Jedediah Smith was the leader. He knew Hugh was going to die, so he asked two men to stay behind and burry him.

Jim Bridger and Fitzpatrick stayed behind. They cleaned him up, and dug his grave. But he didn't die. Days went by, and he didn't die. Fitzpatrick convinced bridger (who was 16 years old at the time) that indians were coming and they needed to leave. So they took his stuff, gun, supplies, food, and placed him in the grave they through a bear skin over him, and about an inch of dirt.

Hugh woke up, he set his broken leg, and began to crawl. He crawled 250 miled it took two months. He lived off of barries and roots. He even once chased coyotes away from a kill they made and he ate it. He would pass out often and once he woke up to find a bear licking his maggot infested back. An occurance that historians claim saved his life from infection.

The bitch of this whole story is he later said in his journal that the only thing keeping him alive was his desire to kill the two men that had abandoned him. He made it to saftey and it took months for him to recoup and years to track the men down.

When he approached Bridger he saw he was still a boy 19 years old, and realized he had been a mere child when the event happened.

Fitz, had enlisted in the Army and so Hugh was out of luck. He was killed by indians ten years later.

End of story.

I am reading the Battle Cry of Freedom right now about events leading up to the civil war from many perspectives and the war itself. Fantastic book. Give it a read.

WOW, i just read an amazing book about the theme " why socialism wasnt a success in the United States! its pretty good, gives you an idea of the mechanisms of organized labour, and specially the imigration special caracteristics in the US that gave it a unique political face. interesting

I think I'll stick to reading my SIs and ESPN the magazine!!

Yep he is like the original Duke!! Man,that story proves the old adage,truth is stranger than fiction..
