Re: Mother drowns baby so she can party

Well if you'd hear some of the punishments people get here you'd be glad with the american legal system
our highest punishment in Holland is 20 years. Only phew people get life sentenced. That is for serial killers and murderers of important dutch people. Instantly a third of the sentence drops so people who get 9 years will only have to do 6...

Oh I am sure or legal system is far from the worst, as it seems that yours is very lenient. In a system such as that.. it would seem retalitory acts would be committed, thus not curbing the original crimes.

I only pray that someday the ultimate judgement will be passed upon those that deserve it.

    Interesting.
I have my own opinions of the American legal system, and I am not sure if the deterrence aspect we use is working.
We tend to have a high percentage of repeat offenders, and it is clogging the prisons.
Do you experience the same in Holland?

I'd be more interested to know what the crime rate is there versus the crime rate in america.
If you can get off lightly with crimes in Holland, one would think that there might be more criminals, since there's less of a chance of being locked up for life or killed, but i have a sneaking suspicion their crime rate is significantly lower.

Very true, i'll look the numbers up for you in a second.
Ofcourse i don't know a lot of the american legal system but with the low sentences we have in Holland it's just unreal. I don't care about the rates actually but what i care about is that people get the punishment they deserve. As with Child murderers of Child molesters they have no rights whatsoever and that is what bothers me with our legal system

It's an infant, it can't even run away.

Why wouldn't she just put it up for adoption? Is she retarded?

Just so sad ... I really don't know what to say. Stupid fucking stories like this make me feel so happy that my daughter has two parents that love her very much.

Crime rate is a poor stat to look at across countries because the same laws are not applied, therefore the data is not comparable.
For instance, in a hypothetical country without laws, the crime rate would be zero.
A better comparison would be to look at the occurrences of a specific crime by capita.

I actually am of the opinion that our prison system is broken, and it incarcerates rather than reforms, which leads to more repeat offenders.
But I also think that is the case is most countries.
Therefore the question comes down to whether or not longer incarcerations reduce the rate of specific crimes or not.
My guess is that it does not.
If that is the case, I would be in favor of shorter sentences and the extra money that would have been spent on incarnation is applied toward rehabilitation programs instead.

Back on topic though, I think that some crimes are horrendous enough that there is no chance at rehabilitation.
In this case, deterrence is the way to go, but deterrence only works when the punishment is truly severe enough to discourage similar activity.
So for cold blooded crimes like drowning your own child in a bathtub because you didn't want the responsibility anymore... I support the death penalty.
