I find it crazy that Hockey and Boxing are not in the top 10.

    It is!

The numbers show, surprisingly, that of all the activities you might participate in this summer, or throughout the rest of the year, basketball had the highest estimated number of injuries, with more than 529,000 during 2006

    Re: Most Hazardous Sports

I think basketball is the most dangerous based on the large number people who play the sport.

The more who play, the more injuries.
    Pure statistics.

However, I will admit, the list does seem off to me at all places.

    Re: Most Hazardous Sports

I think it is because these are Summer sports by normal people like you and me. So that is why there is no hockey or boxing.
Basketball is simply number one because it is played by a TON more people than the other sports.

That's because they don't take participation rates into account.

The rankings do not take into account varying participation rates, which partly explains why many popular sports yielded the greatest number of injuries.

So it's a list of the 10 most played games in America. Good job Yahoo Sports.

Basketball actually has the most injuries.

And I suppose skydiving has the most deadly potential, but statistically is very safe.

And comparing Rugby and American football, well, maybe not how you played judging by the darts comment, American football is far more dangerous. For a few reasons.
    1) In rugby isn't it illegal to hit someone who does not have the ball? Excluding the scrum.
    2) In rugby when the ballcarrier is tackled, possession changes, where in football the ballcarrier must fight for as many yards as he can because they'll be getting the ball back the next play, assuming it's not fourth down.
    3) In football you can commit more to a tackle because there is no passing past the line of scrimmage, excluding tnh laterals, but how often do you see them? And by being able to commit to the hit, you can get to full speed from a long distance away, where in rugby you can easily get burned if you're going full speed by a pass.
    4) It is illegal to block for or shield the ball carrier.
    5) The players themselves. Although there are some great athletes in Rugby, it is not a population of freaks like the NFL. The average size of an NFL player is 6'2" 245 pounds and rising. Rugby players are nowhere near as large on average. They have some very tall players, but no one with the bulk or strength of an NFL linebacker/lineman. Besides size, the rugby players can not match an NFL caliber athlete in speed. The 300+ pound NFL lineman could beat 9/10 men physically fit men off the street in a footrace, then there are the lean guys, forget about it, they'll burn you.

The freakishness of the NFL players combined with the nature of the game, full speed tackling, being able to commit to a hit, and stopping yardage as opposed to just getting the man to the ground makes for far more devastating collisions more frequently. Leading to more injuries.

Rugby might have more minor injuries due to the fact there are no pads and I'd imagine there's a lot of people getting beat up a bit in the scrum, but 90% of the people on the field on any given NFL play will get hit in one way or the other.
