Does anyone here have any experience fixing up a house, for you to live in? By live in, i mean compared to reselling right a way, or renting it out. This house doesn't need much at all:
    1. A new closet door
    2. Sheetrock, mud and tape a 10-12' square patch of the ceiling in the kitchen.
    3. Stove, fridge, dishwasher and over the range microwave, with the last 2 being wants not needs.
    4. Glass in a window replaced.
There is almost nothing I haven't done in the lines of remodeling.....

Re: Money Pit or wise investment

One thing you need to really ask yourself before going this direction-and I am not trying to talk you into one direction or another- is to sit down as a family and make sure you are going to remain committed to the project no matter what. If you are, then you need to commit to getting cost estimates, setting a budget and then sticking to it.

Being in the industry I see it happen often where people start a project and then either run into unforseen problems or decide to make changes mid way that increase the cost of the project and put a strain on the budget. That can also strain relationships and make life miserable as the house is ripped apart and you try to live around the mess. Sometimes in a market like this where it is a buyers market it will be cheaper and less stressful to buy a house that has already been upgraded and you can just move in while( bad as it sounds) the previous owner has done the sweat equity and now is going to lose out on it)
