How much do you think it's costing the state and feds to prosecute?
    $10K
    $20K

All I hear is the court system is over run with cases.... so what should they do?
Go after a kid for a bad joke.
They should just have had eBay drop the ad and notified the kid it was a felony.

    BUT NO!
Lets burden the courts with a frivolous case.

    No harm no foul!

Does a felony stay on your record forever?

I agree with NP and dc.
Joking or not, that's something you don't wanna mess with.
Not that I'm agreeing with the harshity (is that even a word?)..
    Harshness of the punishment.
But on the other hand, you gotta start letting people know they have to be accountable for their actions.
I agree, although, keep in mind that he hasn't been punished yet.
I highly doubt he will get the maximum of 5 years.
More than likely he will get some kind of probation.
And more importantly, a felony conviction.
Had he been serious, then I would pull for the max.
But since it was a (poor) joke, I hope he gets only whatever it takes for him to learn his lesson.
    Which probably won't me much..

    Yes and no.

They stay on your record forever unless expunged.
But every state (I believe) has a process for expunging your record.
Usually that means that after a predetermined amount of time has gone by without them doing anything similar again, the record is sealed or destroyed.

I don't remember if this kid was being prosecuted in federal court or not though...
If so, I don't think that federal felony convictions are eligible to be expunged.

    EDIT:
    Nope. he is in HDC.
He will be able to get it expunged if he doesn't play any more "jokes".
University of Minnesota student Max P. Sanders, 19, was charged with a felony Thursday in Hennepin County District Court after allegedly asking for a minimum of $10 in exchange for voting for the bidder's preferred candidate.

I have not heard about the Hennepin County Court being overrun with cases.
