He was leaving around 2 in the morning from a night of fishing and thought this was the boat landing. Wrong! It was the entrance to the creek, and the ice is never thick where there's moving water. The landing was about 30 yards to the left.

the width of the channel was about the width of a street lane, it goes straight like a street, and it had just snowed, leaving a powder on the ice.
it looks just like a road if you hadnt been there before and known where the real road was.
