    Maur On The Cover!

Mauer is on Sports Illustrated cover

Superstitious Twins fans, don't look now. If the Sports Illustrated cover jinx is alive and well, Joe Mauer's average is about to go in the tank. The next SI to hit the newsstands will have the Twins All-Star catcher smiling on its cover next to the headline "American Idol."
The secondary headline reads: "The Twins' hometown hero has more than a swing that sings; he has the tools to be the best catcher ever." No pressure or anything, right?

Cos I'm new at this whole "baseball" phenomenon, I have to ask..

Is having the SI cover like getting the Madden cover, jinxwise?

The whole box cover / mag cover myth is simply because of regression to the mean. People perform at extraordinary levels and end up being rewarded for it by this type of notoriety. However, the ability to maintain playing at that same level is nearly impossible (Nobody bats .375 lifetime, obviously)... and that is why people tend to do worse after recognition of this type. Maintaining that level of play is VERY difficult.

However, on the bright side, he has maintained a pretty crazy average all yaer long, lets hope he can hold on for the season!!!!

It's about as bad maybe worse. It's not just in baseball either. There were only a few to avoid the curse so far. I think Muhammad Ali and Jordan avoided it.

Anyways... Other person who posted above: that doesn't explain the injuries that happen to these athletes at those times or the absolute career ending dropoffs. For instance: Tony Mandarich.

If she's able to buy all the copies there won't be a jinx.
