Man Finds $21K in Bonds, Gets $100 Reward

DETROIT - A homeless man searching for returnable bottles in a trash bin found 31 U.S. savings bonds worth nearly $21,000 in a bag of clothes.

Charles Moore, 59, took the bonds to a 24-hour walk-in homeless shelter, where a staffer tracked down the family of the man whose name was on the bonds.

"They belong to him," Moore told The Detroit News. "I did the right thing."

Ernest Lehto's family had given away many of his clothes shortly after his death in 2004.

How the bonds ended up in the trash bin is a mystery, but Lehto's family left Moore a $100 reward.

"What a good Samaritan," said Neil Lehto, who picked up the bonds Friday that had belonged to his late father.

What a bunch of cheapskates!!!! The guy returns TWENTY ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS...and they give him a measely hundred bucks. They should have AT LEAST given him a grand. After all, this was money they didn't know anything about...and this guy, who has NOTHING, did "the right thing".

    Their "reward" is insulting.

He should have gotten at least a 10% finders fee.

Goes to show you that people shouldn't be judged by their lot in life. You can be homeless and still be a respectible man.

I personally would have given him like $5,000.. If you look at it, that is money that they never would have had, nor would have known about if that homeless man didn't do the right thing..

On a side note.. If that was $21,000 in cash money, what are the chances a homeless man would have returned that? Probably not very good.. Whatever the case, he should have been rewarded more then what he was..

I would have given him half of it. I wouldn't miss that much being I didn't have it in the first place.
