I believe you're required to turn anything you "find" in to the authorities.
They generally store it for some period (I don't remember, 12 - 24 months) at which time if it's not claimed, you and become the keeper of it.
Somehow I doubt many of us believe $140k in cash would not be "found" in a police station over that course of time though.
The true measure of a man is what he'd do knowing he'd never be found out.

Ok yeah it was a very nobel thing to do. So I cannot blame him for doing that. But two things that i found out from it

Authorities say keeping the money would have been considered grand theft, a felony.

    I never knew that.

But this to me was somewhat of an insult.

Brinks gave Estrada $2,000 for his honesty.

that was it for their screw up? It would of cost them alot more than that had someone not honest had found it.
    Cheapskates!
Are the Brinks people related to Carl Pohlad?
    He wouldn't give that much

    What an idiot.
I would have kept the cash, stashed the cash, let them try and find me.
Sure they might, but they might not as well.
Even if they thought you found it whats to say they can prove otherwise if you stash the loot someplace off your land?
Maybe dig a 3 foot hole some place your familiar with etc and come back 6-12 months down the road.
Sure it's not the noble thing to do, but if it makes any one feel better I did donate $50.00 bones to American Idol gives back.
So it's not as if I'm a complete deuce bag

    Oh you would get caught.
    I watch CSI.
I'm sure they'd find one of your pubic hairs in the street.
    Analyze it.
Figure out you use a special formula of shampoo which is only sold at a convenience store 2 blocks from your house.
Go to the store and get a complete list of customers who have bought the shampoo from credit card scans.
    Knock on every door.
Take pubic hair samples and then you are toast.

    LOL.
Of course, you would still have to explain the $140k to the IRS... unless you planned on simply keeping it in that hole.

Re: Man finds 140K and returns it

I would have just kept it and let it chill for a few months in my closet or something.

If no heat was on me, I would wait a while to spend small amounts of it. For example, pay for my next years tuition with it. Use some of it for a vacation. Use some for a small house deposit. Pay off a few thousand in debt I have. Use some to put down on starting a business. Etc...

If you would only spend $500-15,000 at a time to places such as bill collectors, colleges, vacation agencies, etc.... it wouldn't seem out of the ordinary at all. Now if you went out the next day and paid for a Ferrari Enzo in cash, people may talk. No one on earth would know how you paid your college off, or where you got money for a down payment on a house. Those are things people don't know in the first place.

    I'd of kept the sh*t!

Thats true, unless you didn't buy anything lavish and just spent a few bucks here and there.
Kept it put away for sometime as a retirement fund and pay (as Randy Moss says) with Straight Cash Homey!
