Man finds 140K and returns it

    http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/bizarre&id=6072028

Ok yeah it was a very nobel thing to do. So I cannot blame him for doing that. But two things that i found out from it

Authorities say keeping the money would have been considered grand theft, a felony.

    I never knew that.

But this to me was somewhat of an insult.

Brinks gave Estrada $2,000 for his honesty.

that was it for their screw up? It would of cost them alot more than that had someone not honest had found it.

Re: Man finds 140K and returns it

I think it would have been very hard for most people to keep $140,000 that they found.
Not only would I have an extremely guilty conscience, but the missing $140k would surely have been noticed before too long.
And then it isn't that hard to start collecting information about who was in the area at the time, etc.

Plus $140k is a pretty good sum of money to launder unless you know people.
Even if he just deposited it in the bank, the interest off from it would get reported to the IRS as taxable income, and since he didn't report the $140k in earnings, bells would go off.

I think it is good on his part to return it, and good on the part of Brinks to offer a reward.

Are the Brinks people related to Carl Pohlad?

    Two things:

1- IMO Brinks should have given him 5-10%.
2- How often does this happen and we never hear about it? Rememer the scene in Groundhog Day when he takes the bag off the truck and the 2 old guys are left scratching their heads? Funny.

How long does something have to sit there before 'finders keepers' comes into play. If you lose money is it still yours?

I am glad that they offered him a reward as well, but only $2,000?

True, 1.5% is not much... they probably could have sprung for $3000 and been just fine.

    yep.

I think the reward was fine, $2000 is a lot of money for just doing the right thing. Many people do the right thing everyday and don't get anything. They weren't required to give him anything but they did, good for brinks.
