I'm not sure I understand how the son was able to float away, wouldn't you swim after him?

People affected by autism often dislike being touched or held closely.
This could have had something to do with it.

Currents are much stronger when you get out past the shore... the CNN article says:

After four hours, the currents picked up, and Christopher began to drift from his father's reach. Because of the darkness, they couldn't see each other. So Marino shouted out part of a phrase to his son.

I think he tried his best to keep him in site and within reach.

what a touching story. Beyond belief I really think the father did his best in terrible circumstances.
