Lunch, Dinner, Supper
In some parts of the country lunch is dinner, dinner is supper, and lunch is in the afternoon.
I'm confused, what is the right answer and why can't it all be the same?

Good question... Now, what do you drink with your meal, soda or pop?

Re: Lunch, Dinner, Supper
Let me check my book when I get to work tomorrow.
I will give you the answer.
;D

Some excerts from the book of wisdom....... ;D
Chapter 3, page 15.
Three Squares.
Breakfast occurs in the morning and is very close to the national standard.
You get up and sit in your bathrobe and stare until the coffee is done.
Maybe you have a doughnut with your second cup.
When other members of your household wander in, you don't speak unless spoken to......
Chapter 3, page 16.
Dinner.
The Minnesotan dinner is served at twelve noon sharp and is the major meal of the day.
In smaller towns the fire whistle goes off right on the money so everybody can stop at once.
(That actually happens everyday in Northome MN, my home town).
Chapter 3, page 16.
Supper.
The Minnesota supper is served after 5 but before the 6 o'clock news on TV which is announced with another blast on the fire whistle and typically consists of leftovers from dinner, although many people fry up a few potatoes for extra bulk in the winter.
Chapter 3, page 16.
Lunch and a Little Lunch.
Lunch is typically eaten three ties a day.
Lunch is situated before, after, and between breakfast, dinner and supper.
The Mid-afternoon lunch occurs between 3 and 3:30.
The morning lunch occurs at 10 or shortly thereafter.
A little lunch.
Lunch can also occur at other odd times of the day.
Whenever two or three are gathered toghether, a little lunch will be forthcoming.
I love that book.
;DMany many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Re: Lunch, Dinner, Supper
It's dinner, then lunch, then supper in the farming areas of the country. A big meal was served at noon, then lunch which was like pie and coffee or something like that. Then dinner wasn't as big a meal as the afternoon dinner.

Re: Lunch, Dinner, Supper
My family always had lunch and then dinner.
My wife's family had dinner then supper.
The confusion over which meal was called "dinner" has been the cause of more than a couple of mix ups...
Now we have lunch and supper.Zeus wrote:

Re: Lunch, Dinner, Supper
To me lunch is lunch while dinner and supper are interchangeable, I think I used to say supper more but switched to dinner shortly after switching to soda.

Re: Lunch, Dinner, Supper
I was a dinner and supper guy growing up in SD, then I moved to PA after college and I always was asking people if they wanted to have dinner at noon time, they were very confused.
I explained to them that that dinner & supper is more correct.
When I looked up the definitions many years ago it said Supper is traditionally the last meal of the day, which fits, and Dinner is the larges meal of the day.
Which as some people already mentioned on here around the farm is often the noon time meal.
Over the years I have just grown tired of fighting the East Coast mentality and I now am pretty much a Lunch and Dinner guy.
