Johan Santana Traded To Mets
UPDATE, 1-29-08 at 3:15pm: Bob Nightengale of USA Today says an agreement to trade Santana to the Mets has been reached.
They'll send Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey.
The Mets still have to work out a six or seven year extension for Santana, according to Nightengale.

How does that sound as far as the trade goes?

well the good part of this is that at least we gutted them of all their top pitching prospects..this guerra guy is especially going to be a superstar

its not a bad trade, but obviously it wouldve been real nice to get that fernando martinez thrown in

gomez is a 5 tool guy tho who will be a very good all around outfielder as soon as he settles in..guerra is only 18, and considered a pitching phenom who has already pitched very well for the mets in the minors..mulvey and humber were both expected to compete for starting spots this year and are projected 2/3 rotation guys

Guerra and Gomez are keepers...jury's out yet on Humber and Mulvey.

At which point they trade him or even worse let him go in FA because the owner is too cheap to keep a good player on the team. I just hope this is a huge steal, similar to the Pierzynski (sp?) for Nathan Liriano and Bonser deal.

we offered him 5 years, 100 million dollars and he turned it down..and apparently you missed the twins re-signing morneau, mauer, and cuddyer to long term big money contracts..now we got 1 future star starter, 2 middle rotation guys, and a potential star outfielder

as much as it sucks to lose santana, we got some real nice pieces in this deal that could eventually help us to round out and balance this roster..liriano is now healthy and says hes throwing all of his previous pitches at the same velocity, so weve got our ace, who is now surrounded by a good number of good young pitchers, and top pitching prospects on the verge of making the club in a year or two

No, I got the resigning thing, I'm just cynical from a lot of years of not shelling out to keep players, and the fact it seems like Minnesota is not getting any stronger, while cleveland and detroit are scary. I hopr you are right.

the reason im optimistic is because since bill smith has taken over, hes been able to convince pohlad to shell out some money and has made some nice moves..santana didnt sign, but nobody can say the twins didnt offer him the money he deserved, as he got exactly what he wanted in terms of annual pay, but just not for 7 years

itl be interesting now to see if the mets can even work out a 7 year deal for him since they already made it clear that they also will only negotiate a 5 year contract with him, except in the area of 22-25 mil a year

This is a good trade in MHO
