    That's a pretty crazy story.

Who has the responsibility to maintain and perform service on those cables, one wonders.

Thanks to PPE for the sig.

The article said the current theory is that a boat's anchor cut two of the under-sea telecommunications cables. The owner of that boat must be having nightmares about lawsuits right now.

Typically the boss doesn't want to hear about boats, anchors or under-sea telecom stuff.
    To techy for him.

He'll just say, get if fixed.

Watch, this will become a sort of terrorist attack targets now.. cripple much of the day to day activity and business with a mass outage like this.

Wonder what kind of an impact this has on our military efforts over there?

Trust me this is a fairly common occurence with undersea cables, not only do they get damaged due to shipping and other externals factors, but they do also develop faults as well. Working for a major telecom company I see the advisories that are issued and the vast majority are in the Asia Pac region.

The cable ships pretty much fix a fault, reach port and are re-fuelled/re-provisioned and turn straight back round to the next repair. One thing that does always surprise me is that problems experienced by companies/governments and yet the time it takes to get the permits issued by the governments is a real drag.

Usually though these faults aren't a problem as there is always spare and diverse capacity to divert the traffic onto. Of course there is an onus on the companies and telecoms companies to manage their networks better to ensure they use diverse routing for their circuits.
