If pass blocking, take a step back and push the guy's chest to keep him away from the quarterback.

that means the guy is coming towards you and that you shouldn't be letting him get past ...

Move your feet. Don't just stand. The defender will most likely get away.

If you can, try to push the guy onto his back. That is called a pancake.
