Hispanic community boycotts Atlanta
It has been pretty weird here today. Not sure how this will affect the local economy. I heard a report that said the Hispanic community accounts for around $800,000 a day in Atlanta. It also seems like this would be a very easy opportunity for the INS to request a list of employees who did not report to work today. On the bright side, my normal one hour and 15 minute commute to work this morning only took about 40 minutes.
Activists Organize Work Stoppage
(AP) Immigrant activists organized a work stoppage today in Georgia to protest legislation to crack down on illegal immigration. The House passed a bill yesterday that would deny some state services to adults living in the U.S. illegally and impose a five percent surcharge on wire transfers from illegals. Supporters say the plan, which passed by 123-51, is a vital homeland security measure that frees up limited state resources for Georgia residents who are legally entitled to them. Opponents say it unfairly targets workers who are merely responding to the demands of some of the state's largest industries. Activists called for a "day of dignity" today when immigrants would refrain from buying anything and skip work if possible. The observance has been promoted on Spanish-speaking media throughout Georgia. Teodoro Maus, of the Coordinating Committee of Community Leaders, says the action is not a boycott but a signal of the immigrant community's impact on the state's economy. (***03/24/06 @ 12:30 pm***)

Well isn't that special.
Let's protest FOR crimminals and their right to break the laws of this country.
You know immigration laws all over Europe are leading the way in cracking down on illegal aliens.
The US spends 21 billion on healthcare for illegals
14 billion for educating illegal alien children.
7 billion on housing.
12.6 billion on food stamp programs for them.
A full 24% of prisoners in Federal prison are illegal aliens.
Who knows what that cost is.
But they say they are not a burden and really give more than they take.
Is that right?
But God forbid don't let an American citizen say we should stop the flood of illegals into their own country.
But this is all about to change for our uninvited population of illegals.
And it is about time!

I agree 110%, just trying not to get political. A local Hispanic newspaper published a map to the house of the guy that sponsered the bill...Well isn't that special.

Re: Hispanic community boycotts Atlanta
Usually I would make some kinda lefty argument about how illegal immigrants are a necessary part of the local and national economy but they're swept under the carpet because it's the West's dirty little secret that slavery still persists in this new form..
But when you get stories like THIS that were caused by and perpetuated because of the flow of illegal labour.. Any arguments that are to the contrary of cracking down on illegal labour are pointless.

I am not against any person immigrating to the US LEGALLY.
I say sign up, get approved and then I welcome you with open arms.
Now take part in the greastest country in the history of the world.
I think it is only fair.
