Teens allegedly beat kittens, throw them to dog
11:00 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 26, 2006
    From WFAA-TV Staff

Dallas police are looking for several teenagers who they said fed kittens to a pit bull at a northeast Dallas complex Monday night.

A witness said she saw a group kids, some as young as 5-years-old, watching as teenagers kicked and beat four kittens, about 2 to 3-weeks-old, and then threw them to a dog.

When a neighbor tried to stop the teenagers, one of their mothers allegedly punched her.

"He was kicking the animals; and when they tried to run off, he would grab them and throw them to the pit bull so it could destroy the kittens," said Ella Brown, a witness. "It was awful. I never saw anything like that in my whole life."

Witnesses said it appeared the teens were killing the kittens just for fun. Under state law, torturing or killing an animal is a state jail felony.

Too bad they didnt throw TO to the pitbull when he was still "groggy".
In all seriousness though that is pretty terrible.

Charges filed in kitten cruelty case

Investigators have filed charges against a man and a woman for their alleged roles in a Monday night animal cruelty case involving a group of teens feeding kittens to a pit bull in northeast Dallas.

The incident occurred in front of a crowd of more than 20 teenagers and adults at the Sienna Springs Apartments at 9455 Skillman St.

Assistant Dallas Police Chief Jan Easterling, who oversees the Dallas Police Department’s Northeast Division, said this morning that said detectives identified a man and a woman as the two main actors in the incident but were still searching for them.

Investigators are withholding the suspects’ identities until they are arrested.

A police report states that the juveniles took several kittens from a blue plastic box, threw them on the ground and kicked them to a pit bull, which tore them apart.

A woman who stopped with her family to check her mail at the apartments about 7:20 p.m. Monday said a group of children and teenagers had gathered around to watch the spectacle.

"It was very disgusting," said Elia Brown, 33, of Dallas. "There were 20 kids watching. Some of them, like the younger children, were scared, some were shocked, and some of the older ones were enjoying it."

Brown tried to intervene but said she was assaulted by the pit bull owner's mother, who allegedly told her to "mind her own business."

Some of the teenagers allegedly scooped up the kittens' bodies in a yellow bucket while others chased Brown and her family with sticks and bats.

"My two children were very afraid," she said Tuesday. "We couldn't stay there that night. ... We're going to have to move. We can't be around that."

Brown described the youths at the scene as being between 12 and 17 years old.

Managers at the apartment complex did not return calls seeking comment earlier this week.

James Bias, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas, said earlier this week that his organization was shocked to learn of the incident but more stunned that an adult may have permitted the cruelty.

"The idea that these animals had to be subjected to abuse is horrendous, but we've got an adult around watching and condoning their actions," he said.

Under state law, torturing or killing an animal in an act of cruelty is a state jail felony punishable by six months to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Bias said juveniles arrested for the severe acts of animal cruelty can be tried as adults.

"My hope would be that law enforcement working with prosecutors would take this as far as they can under state law," he said.
