Thread: Help with Black lab puppies.

My black lab - Golden retriever mix:

Her name is Blake...we call her Big Girl...and thank God that my stepson had her fixed...I don't envy your situation right now, Prophet!

Your making me hungry.

Make sure she expels a placenta for each puppy. You can let her eat them, but I wouldn't let her eat all of them unless you want a squirting problem.
Hours can and do pass between pups.
If you can palpate her, you can see if she is "empty" and then breathe a sigh of relief. A puppy's head feels like a golf ball, or maybe in the case of labs a baseball.
Make her nurse. If necessary make her lie down and hold her there until she gets the idea. Be prepared, her nips will get sore and she might not want to over the next couple of days. After that, she will want to get the milk out and be willing to nurse.
Keep the pups warm. Imperitive. A cold or chilled pup cannot digest. Not good.
Also, make sure each pup gets some colostrum. Essential to the immune system.
