My son had a Little League Appreciation Night a couple of years ago with the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (AAA Team of the Phillies).
They divided up the kids and sent them out to the different positions for the national anthem.
My son went to first base.

Two weeks later that first baseman was called up to the "show" and went on to become the National League Rookie of the Year . . . and then hit 60 home runs the next year (last season).
    His name?
    Philladelphia Phillies' Ryan Howard.

Okay, so it's not exactly away from the sport . . . and it wasn't me, but still a cool story.
Nice story and great for the kids!
I'd much rather see the Packers miss the playoffs because of their talent then because of their injuries.

I didn't meet him, but I was behind Jim Kleinsasser at Blockbuster in Grand Forks when he was a junior or senior at UND.
He was with two slutty looking sorority girls renting chick flicks.

I got drunk with Rickey Young at Vikings training camp last year.
    I think that's about it.

If you're just talking famous people, I've played ultimate frisbee with JFK, Jr. & Daryl Hannah, and tossed the disc in Central Park with Woody Harrelson.

Okay - now I'm remembering a couple more:
    * Saw the Iron Shiek (with some other WWF guys - this was in about '88 or '89) at a Perkins in Marshalltown, IA.
Approached him for an autograph and he jumped right into character and started insulting me.
Was very cool for me as a teenager - and I got the autograph.
My buddy Ryan went over and stole the dollar bill he left as a tip (Ryan replaced it, more accurately, with a non-Iron Shiek dollar bill)

    * Ran into Jeff Gordon at a restaurant in NYC after his rookie season (so this was '92, I believe?) when he was trying to dine incognito with his then-girlfriend, now ex-wife, Brooke Gordon-Sealey.
She was a Miss Winston and they were not supposed to date drivers, so this was very hush-hush at the time.
Of course, walking around Manhattan in a big, garish, Dupont Motorsports jacket didn't lend himself to blending in, but, I suppose he thought no one there would recognize him.
I'm pretty sure he got laid that night because of me, because she was pretty damn impressed that someone in NYC knew who he was.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

Don't forget your legislature buddy who was in the same suite with you at one of the Vikings games.

And of course Zygi Wilf at the 2006 Draft Party.
