    HD TV Question....

I just bought a Samsung HLS5086W 50inch HD DLP TV last nite and quite frankly, the picture is nothing like what it was at the store.

I also bought a samsung DVD player and I bought HDLI Cable for it but still I am not that impressed.

Does anyone know a trick or does anyone else have DLP tv and can help me out?

    Re: HD TV Question....

What picture are you speaking of?

If you are talking about HDTV, you need to subscribe to those channels and tune to a specific channel.
You may be able to capture some HD channels off an antenna as well.

Without the extra service from Cable TV / Sat you pretty much have an expensive box.

I have a SONY and regular TV shows are kindof crappy, but the HD channels are eye numbing.
Our HD stations out in PA are in the 700's.

Also keep in mind, that not everything on an HD station is broadcast in HD . . . advertisements for example.
    Sporting events are incredible.

If you are speaking of your DVD, your movies should be crisper than regular TV, but if you want HD you need to buy an HD DVD player and associated discs.
Computer generated movies, such as those made by Pixar, look great without the HD DVD player.

If you set-up your TV and DVD player properly, you will be able to enjoy widescreen movies without the bars as well.

    Re: HD TV Question....

the cables that connect everything could make a difference.
i'm no expert, but there are cheap cables that you buy for 20$ or if you wanna fork over some money you can go hte more expensive route and pay 100$ for cables, but i'm sure it makes a difference.
i'd go back to the store that you bought it from and ask what could help.

    Re: HD TV Question....

    check a few things first:

-is your picture in any sort of stretched mode?
If so your quality would not be at its best

-like the others said, if you're not receiving an HD signal your picture will not be near the best quality that it could be...a large DLP in a small room on an analog reception will look quite distorted when stretched

-make sure everything is hooked up right...a good way to troubleshoot is by using an XBOX 360 or something that you know is in HD.
For example, you can hook up a 360 with component cables to your TV and you should get an idea of what an HD picture should look like.
If you have access to a 360 i would try this.
If you do, however, make sure that the switch on the component HD cord has the small button switched to HDTV mode.

-also check the settings on the samsung.
On my old HDTV I had to make sure my picture was set to 1080i or 720p, so make sure you are in the right mode for the reception you are receiving (use HD resolution settings when receiving HD and analog settings when receiving non-HD).

-there are a few other things I could show you, let me know if you need anymore help, I love messing with stuff like this!

p.s. i sold tv's for like 3 years so i had to do this all the time!

Which ports on the back of your equipment are you using? Is there anything in between the connection of your DVD player to your TV or your TV cable line & your TV such as surround sound? Do you subscribe to HD service?

I bought the same TV a couple months back.
    I love it.

What everyone is saying about the HD signal is correct.
If you're just dumping a regular cable signal (even if it is from digital cable), it's not going to be HD.
And on that TV, it's going to look rather fuzzy at times.
In the store, they are running an HD-DVD, so show off the true sharpness of HD.

Here in Dakota County, MN, we have Charter Cable as our provider.
When they came to hook up the HD, what that really meant for us is that we got 2 new HD cable boxes (the other TV I had in the family room was already HD-Ready).
Once those were hooked up, the HD channels (they are on separate channels from the non-HD signal - ie. Channel 4 (WCCO - CBS) is Channel 4 *and* Channel 784(HD).

The DVD-player - is it one of the "upconvert-to-HD" units?
If so, grab yourself a newer DVD after it's plugged in and ready and run it.
I've found DVDs to be *amazing*.

Keep posting here if you have other questions or issues.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

You may want to write down how you have everything hooked up and go back to the store you bought it from . . . or call a customer service number.

Although rare, you could have a bad set.

Check your TV & DVD settings and make sure the conectors are in right, then give them a visit or call.

If everything is working properly and set-up right . . . you should be mesmerized by the picture!
