With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

The first 1000 digits of everybody's favorite number...
I like pie, but I prefer a whisker biscuit.

I prefer the slightly more rare hairless biscuit...

So, if it is a non-repeating number pass the decimal, why do people keep trying to see how many digits pass they can calculate.
I mean its great that today's computers have gone to a trillion digits, but that helps them understand what?
Are they trying to see if the can ever find a repeating pattern, or they just have to know what the next number in the string is?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of pi.
The fact you can calculate the circumference of a circle with it is brilliant and the movie was pretty good as well.
But I think the compute power could be better served to help Chilly and the staff figure out how to put more points on the board next year.
I think they just want to know the next number, I wonder what the 2 trillionth digit of pi is, nobody knows, but maybe someday they will(I can't wait). Plus it's not like they are using the biggest computer on the planet for this, that is reserved for playing chess.
