Wow, I would really have to go old school on this one....Definitely Aerosmith is one.......Because if you look at longevity and if you listen to EVERY kind of music then I would have to say The Isley Brothers would be one; been together since 1958 when they were kids and had hits then and they had a gold album 2 years ago. Almost 40 years and have had a top 40 hit or #1 song in each decade on the Pop and or R&B Chart......Another group is Earth Wind & Fire; they have a current album out that kicks a$$ and if you watch the current adds for Target you see they can still bring it.....Plus the only group ( 13 Members ) besides the Bee Gees and the Beattles, and Rolling Stones where each member achieved a Grammy Nomination or recieved a Grammy outside the group itself! But do they sell out like Aerosmith, nope! So I would have to put Aerosmith #1........Again I'm not old just old school....

Not knockin' EW&F (they are one of my favorites as well), but isn't allowing your music to be used in commercials usually considered "selling out"???

Re: the greatest american band ever is....................

This is way too hard to pick just one...especially if you listen to practically everything like I do...but I HAVE seen Aerosmith LIVE so I would have to say that they rank way up there!

If you break it down by genre, it's still difficult but it allows more than one band to be on the top of at least ONE list.

    STILL way too hard though!!!
