    Vikings issue statement on Steinbrenner

Members of the Vikings ownership group were certainly familiar with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 80.

Was he a great owner? Or an asshole owner who liked to spend money to fuel a winning franchise? I always had the impression of the latter...but perhaps I am mistaken?

Either way, RIP to George. His franchise helped rebound baseball after 94'

If he were our owner and he threw it around to get us more championships, we'd appreciate him.

Probably. I'd take him over Pohlad or McCombs, that's for sure. Although it's apples and oranges since the yankees have the largest market in the world to work with(steinbrenner made alot of money on the yankees, and public financing).
If you read his wiki page there are a few things outside of spending big bucks that are not so pretty, like being a convicted felon, and recieving a lifetime ban from baseball. I guess it pays to have money and influence since he got both over turned.

lol. Loved by yank fans, hated by other teams that couldn't compete.

If what he did was illegal, then I'd see an issue, but the guy did what he had to do to run a top-notch team.

The fact he could get away with buying championships is not his fault, its the MLB's. If the NFL had no cap, and Wilf would buy all the best players money could buy, leading to multiple championships, I'd love it. Alas, not the case.

I wasn't trying to say that he is an asshole because he spent money on the team...just wondering if he was really a great owner, or if he was only a great owner because he was willing to spend, making it easier for those around him to overlook the fact he was a richard. I always heard rumors how he wasn't a very nice guy and was extremely controlling. Not sure if any of that is true though.
