    Fighting the Fargo Flood

Well, this is the third time in 12 years that we have had a 100 year flood in Fargo.
I think they need to redefine what we consider a 100 year flood...

Here are some pics of the ongoing efforts to get ready for the high waters.
Most of the city's dikes only go up to 38 feet.
We are expecting a crest of 41 feet.
This will be the worst flood in the recorded history of Fargo.

FYI, my arms and back hurt from sandbagging yesterday, but part of me enjoys the way the community rises to the challenge.
I will be back out building dikes tomorrow...

The dikes need to be about 3 to 6 feet higher than they are right now.
The estimate is we need about 2 million sandbags to do it - by Thursday.
To make matters worse, it is raining/snowing every day...

    My house is thankfully safe.
We live in West Fargo pretty close to the Sheyenne River.
But after 1997 the city/county spend a lot of money building the Sheyenne River Diversion, which should be able to handle this flood.
I am volunteering with the city to help build dikes along the Red in Fargo, but to be honest, I don't know if we are going to get done in time.

Water and sewage-treatment facilities were at risk as the river was expected to crest at about 40 feet over the next week or so. Flood stage is anything above 17 feet.

Damn, 3 times in the last 12 years.
Wish you could ship some of that water down to central Texas, we're in one of our worst drought periods.
Since I think the Red flows north, it might be a bit difficult.

Hopefully it doesn't do too much damage.

Good luck to you and your friends.

I do not remember the year (in the early 90's) when we had a big flood up there.
I was not there in '97 for that one as well.
