Currently, Futurama (new episodes coming soon!) is probably the best animated show on television.

Choosing historically is a bit tougher. Simpsons had about 4 or 5 truly great seasons. South Park has long been hit or miss (but when they hit, they friggin crush it out of the park). I'd have to say these two lead the way. Followed by (in no particular order):

Family Guy (also very hit and miss, often in the same episode)

Loony Tunes (these are so much fun to go back and watch as an adult, completely different than watching them as a kid)

Aquateen Hunger Force (the funny wore off fairly quickly, but man it was funny while it lasted)

Space Ghost (buddy of mine went as Brak one year for Halloween. Damn that was a great costume. Oh yeah, this show rocked too. Better guests than Terry Gross)

Spongebob Squarepants (either you get it or you don't)
Honestly, I agree with pretty much everything you said.

Spongebob... I worked in a daycare for two years and had to watch a lot of this, found myself laughing quite a bit.
    oh, god.... those poor children.

Historically, I have the most respect for the Simpsons, but it's not been what it once was...

Family Guy is my #1 followed closely by Southpark.
I agree with the hit/miss statements but I respect their outright shots and anybody and anything that is "stupid" and their ability to flaunt it.

    Fat Albert.

Haven't seen it for a very long time. LOL

Personally, I don't think there is intelligent life on other planets. Why should other planets be any different from this one?

    Re: Favorite animated comedy?

You didn't say anything about animated films.
Lion's King gotta be the most rememberable and popular animated film of all time.
I really like the Ice Age-movies (haven't seen the third one yet) and I think they appeal to both kids and adults.
    Madagascar has some hilarious moments.
The Shrek-movies really knows how to make fun of the classic fairytales, but the third one was a huge disappointment.

... As for animated series, South Park has many of the funniest moments of all time. Definitely the funniest animated series for adults. The way they bring up serious and important topics in a funny way, and try to prove a point at the same time, is simply geniusly.

You don't see the Family Guy do the same thing, and that's why it will never be anywhere near as good as South Park.

    Family Guy #1 by far.

    Closest second is Robot Chicken.
    No love for "The Tick"?

And "Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast" fucking rocked, too.

    =Z=
I liked the Tick when it was on- Space Ghost C2C too.
Robot Chicken is pretty good, but I gotta say the Venture Brothers has been my favorite since it started. I never missed an episode of Jonny Quest when I was a kid, so I watch
    Venture
Brothers every chance I get! GO TEAM VENTURE!!

As animated films go I was really impressed with "Finding Nemo" and "UP".
