I highly doubt the DVD case did anything.
If the bullet already hit 1 person and shattered a window, there probably wasn't enough velocity to be fatal.
I couldn't imagine a platic DVD case would provide any more protection than say, a jacket or sweatshirt.
I'm no balistic expert though so who knows.
